Badiashile, 21, is a highly-rated youngster who has been capped three times by France at the senior level. He has been a mainstay in Monaco’s defence since breaking into the first team in 2018. The left-footed centre-back is renowned for his physical presence, aerial ability, and composure on the ball. He is also comfortable playing on the left side of a back three, providing versatility to Chelsea’s defensive options. Chelsea boss Graham Potter has been keen to reinforce his defence, which has been prone to conceding goals this season. Badiashile’s arrival is expected to provide competition for the likes of Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Wesley Fofana. Speaking after the signing was announced, Potter said: “Benoit is a talented young defender who we have been monitoring for some time. He is strong, quick, and comfortable with the ball at his feet. We believe he has the potential to become a key player for us.” Badiashile’s signing is the first major acquisition for Chelsea since the club was taken over by Todd Boehly’s consortium in May 2022. The Blues have spent heavily in the transfer market in recent years, but have struggled to find consistent form this season. With the addition of Badiashile, Chelsea will hope to improve their defensive record and challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League. The Frenchman could make his debut for the club in their upcoming match against Crystal Palace on January 15.
