In a trial that lasted several months, prosecutors presented evidence that Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, planned and carried out the bombings that killed three people and injured hundreds more. The attacks targeted the finish line of the marathon, which is one of Boston’s most famous events. After the bombings, Tsarnaev and his brother allegedly led police on a high-speed chase and shootout, during which Tamerlan was killed. Dzhokhar was captured alive after hiding in a boat in Watertown, Massachusetts. The jury found Tsarnaev guilty of all charges, including 17 counts of murder, 16 counts of attempted murder, and one count of carjacking. He faces the possibility of the death penalty. Collier, 27, was shot and killed on April 19, 2013, while investigating a possible carjacking at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prosecutors said that Tsarnaev and his brother killed Collier to steal his gun and avoid arrest. Collier’s family expressed relief at the verdict. “We know that a verdict will not bring Sean back, but it does mean that justice has been done for our son and for all the victims,” they said in a statement. Tsarnaev’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin on February 5, 2015.
